Mission
My mission is to help employees prevent fatalities, serious injuries and life-changing incidents by taking ownership of their personal safety.
Safety is not only the responsibility of managers, supervisors or safety officers. Every worker has a role to play. Every decision matters. Every shortcut carries a risk. My purpose is to help people understand that before an accident happens, not after.
Who I Am
My name is Partington Oswald Mtatabikwa, and I am a motivational safety speaker who speaks from personal experience.
I do not share my story to gain sympathy. I share it to help others. Because I speak from real experience, I have seen people’s attitudes towards safety change wherever I go. My message connects with workers because it is honest, human and practical.
I know what it means for one workplace incident to change everything.
What Happened
On 4 June 2010, while working for a mining company in the Northern Cape, South Africa, I was involved in a life-changing workplace incident.
The incident was serious, unfortunate and preventable. As a result, I lost an arm and a leg. I spent almost a year in hospital, facing pain, uncertainty and a future I could no longer recognise.
At that time, I never thought I would walk again. It felt as though the whole world was against me. My life, career and confidence had been completely shaken.
But through the grace of God, the support of people around me and my own determination, I began to pick up the pieces and move forward.
My Experience
I often say:
“Experience is no substitute for safety.”
Many people speak about experience as though it is always an advantage. In many ways it is, but experience can also be dangerous when it creates complacency.
After working as a qualified artisan for more than 18 years, I thought I understood my work well. I had knowledge, skill and experience. But experience did not make me immune from accidents.
That is one of the most important lessons I now share with others.
When people become too comfortable, they can stop seeing risk clearly. They may rush. They may take shortcuts. They may believe that because they have done something many times before, nothing can go wrong.
But one moment can change everything.
My accident taught me that safety must never be taken for granted. Procedures, training and protective equipment matter, but mindset matters too. Workers must believe that safety applies to them personally.
Living With Purpose
Today, I no longer live my life by chance. I live with gratitude and purpose.
I have stopped crying over what happened. Instead, I have chosen to use my experience to help others avoid walking the same path.
My purpose is to encourage employees to take ownership of their safety, and to inspire those who are disadvantaged, discouraged or living with disability to keep moving forward.
Disability is not inability. A life-changing incident does not have to be the end of purpose, contribution or hope.
Why My Message Matters
The workplace should never be a place where people lose their lives, their limbs or their futures because of preventable incidents.
That is why I speak.
I want workers to understand the real cost of unsafe choices. I want teams to think before they act. I want organisations to remember that behind every safety rule is a person, a family and a future worth protecting.
My message is simple:
Safety is personal.
Safety is your responsibility.
Safety protects the life you want to live.
As Aristotle said:
“The ideal man bears the accidents of life with dignity and grace, making the best out of circumstances.”
That is what I have chosen to do.
